How to Price Baked Goods for Profit

Practical guidance for building a more organized baking business.

Start with the real cost of the product

Pricing baked goods profitably starts with knowing what each product actually costs you to produce. Ingredients matter, but they are only one part of the price. Packaging, labor, utilities, payment fees, equipment wear, delivery time and other overhead all consume revenue. If those costs are invisible in your pricing, a busy bakery can still feel like it never has enough money left over.

Pay yourself for labor

For each product, begin with a repeatable recipe and calculate the ingredient cost for one sellable unit or batch. Then assign labor based on the time you actually spend mixing, baking, decorating, packaging and preparing the order. If custom work adds additional design or communication time, that should be considered too.

Include overhead

Overhead does not need to be complicated. A practical bakery pricing process simply needs a consistent way to account for costs that are not attached to one ingredient. The goal is not perfect accounting down to the penny; it is to stop pretending those costs do not exist.

Build in profit instead of hoping for it

Once cost and labor are visible, choose a profit target that allows the business to grow. A selling price should not merely reimburse you for ingredients. It should contribute to the health of the business after the order is completed. Review your prices whenever ingredient costs, packaging, labor expectations or the complexity of your products change.
